The Parish Council has been awarded £35,500 from Telford and Wrekin Council’s Pride in Your High Street Fund. The grant programme aims to breathe new life into market towns within the borough by encouraging projects that will promote businesses and revitalise the high streets. The Parish Council is providing match funding of £4000.
The aim of the bid, which was developed in partnership with Ironbridge Business Consortium, is to promote Ironbridge as more than a heritage destination, and showcase the many fantastic shops, bars, restaurants and creative industries we have here, as well as the wonderful landscape and many walking and riding trails. The project aims to encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more of the Gorge, and spend more money to boost the local economy. Whilst the funding is targeted at Ironbridge, we hope the impact will felt throughout the Gorge.
Website promotion. We are working with businesses and the Destination Management Team at Telford and Wrekin Council to develop a new web based marketing for the Gorge that will include information on all the Gorge has to offer including the many events and activities throughout the year.
Digital information points. These will help people to orientate themselves, plan their day and discover what else there is to see and do in the area.
Waymarking. We will be improving existing signage in Ironbridge to help visitors find other attractions away from the Iron Bridge.
Building plaques. There are a huge number of interesting buildings in Ironbridge, many with fascinating histories. We will be creating round information plaques to be displayed on key buildings along Wharfage, Tontine Hill and High Street to tell the stories associated with these buildings and encourage visitors to walk the full length of the riverside, rather than just stay by the Iron Bridge.
High Street landscaping. The area of open space between High Street and Church Hill, next to the Rotary Club garden, has been unkempt and overgrown for many years. This has added to the poor appearance of the High Street, creating a dark and uninviting space. With the grant funding we have cleared and replanted the area with plants that will provide year round colour. Whilst the grant has covered the cost of materials, the planting has been carried out by the Gorge Green Gang volunteers.
Window dressing. We are purchasing displays that can be used to dress the windows of empty shops. The displays can also be used at events to promote all the Gorge has to offer.
As we deliver projects further updates will be posted here.
