The Gorge Parish Council is to become the 13th in Telford and Wrekin to set up a Parish Environmental Team (PET).
This will mean that 80% of households in the borough in the region of 56.500 properties – are now served by PETs, who carry out enhanced environmental maintenance above and beyond what is already done by the council’s own maintenance teams.
Typically, a PET includes a TWS Ltd employer, an apprentice and vehicle to service and maintain a specific parish area.
Each team is equipped with a range of small powered equipment including a strimmer, hedge cutters and hand tools.
They follow a local works programme, which has been developed and agreed by the parish. The team not only maintains the area with a “pride of patch”responsibility but also report any local issues which they come across and cannot fix themselves.
A PET is dedicated to the Parish area and will also undertake other environmental improvements schemes to enhance the local area.
Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Customer and Neighbourhood Services, said: “I am delighted that The Gorge Parish Council is the latest in the borough to commit to having a Parish Environmental Team.
“The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site is very much the jewel in Telford’s crown and it can only benefit from the closer daily attention that a PET will be ablet o give it.
“The Gorge PET will become the thirteenth Parish Environmental Team in the borough which demonstrates the success of this excellent initiative by Telford & Wrekin Council.”
A spokesman for The Gorge Parish Council said: “As a small council covering a beautiful conservation area with many footpaths and green areas, the Gorge Parish Council are very pleased to have joined the PET scheme.
“We are particularly proud to be employing an apprentice for this work, in order to encourage more young people to consider a career in grounds maintenance.
“We hope that residents will start to see an improvement in their environment and would encourage them to contact the Parish Council to let us know which areas they believe deserve a little extra maintenance.
“Do follow us on our Parish Website to see the impact the team is having on our parish environment.”
